Bruce James Parsons, born on Christmas Eve, 1922, finished his earthly journey on November 27, 2020 at the age of 97.
He found his calling in life when his interest in optometrics was piqued while working for Dr. Hessel N. Rushmere O.D. who taught him to grind eyeglass lenses, manufacture glasses, and in all ways opened the world of optometry to a young and enthusiastic student. This experience prompted him to attend the University of Utah, then to go on to the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a doctorate in optometry in 1949. He returned to his Utah hometown where he opened Murray Vision Center and maintained his practice until he retired. Bruce also served as optometrist at the Utah State Prison for many years.
Bruce met Thelma Bagnell when both were attending the University of Utah. They were married in 1950 and together raised their four children Cheryl Ann Marzec, Wendy Jean Baker, Craig Bruce and Vaughn James Parsons in Murray.
Bruce was always active in his community. He was a charter member of the Murray Rotary Club and was elected to serve as his club’s first president in 1957. He served in many club and district leadership roles including being selected to serve as Governor of Utah Rotary District 5420 in RY1984-85. Bruce and Thelma were also active with the Wasatch Mountain Club.
